Fritillaria

The name comes from the Latin word: fritillus, meaning dice cup. One of the most distinctive features of fritillaria is the hole (puncture) in the bulb. This is particularly noticeable in the large cultivars. This hole marks the place where the old flower stem has been. The bulb is quite fragile due to the lack of a dry, protective skin. Almost all fritillaries have pendulous bell-shaped flowers. The soil type should be well-drained and humus-rich where the Fritillaria should be planted deep. Although the bulbs are reasonably hardy, a winter cover is warmly recommended. The decorative seed pods can be used in bouquets.
