First described in the Flora Napolitana in 1829. This species is found in woodland and grassland areas from southern to central Europe and Iran. The white, star-shaped flowers, with their characteristic green undersides, are borne on a branched flower stalk; the whole plant does not grow much taller than 12–15 cm. A synonym is O. tenuifolium.

Description

BELONGS TO THE HYACINTHACEAE FAMILY

From the Greek: ornis (bird) and gala (milk). The genus Ornithogalum consists of a group of bulbous plants suitable for naturalization. The many species, as well as the cultivars, are certainly suitable as cut flowers.

They originate predominantly from the temperate regions of Europe, Asia, and Africa. The bulbs are said to be quite nutritious and tasty, naturally after being cooked.
