Description
Intro: 1878. Native to Asia, southern and western Europe and England. The clusters, up to 50 cm long, consist of star-shaped flowers, which are yellow with green on the inside, and green on the outside. The bulbs are edible, the taste is similar to that of salsify, the flower bud and stem are eaten in the same way as asparagus.
BELONGS TO THE HYACINTHACEAE FAMILY
From the Greek: ornis (bird) and gala (milk). The genus Ornithogalum consists of a group of bulbous plants suitable for naturalization. The many species, as well as the cultivars, are certainly suitable as cut flowers.
They originate predominantly from the temperate regions of Europe, Asia, and Africa. The bulbs are said to be quite nutritious and tasty, naturally after being cooked.
