Description
Canadian Alan McMurtrie is famous among Iris enthusiasts for his fanatical interest in Iris reticulata. Thousands of crosses and selections in the most beautiful colours and anomalous shapes have been cultivated by him.
BELONGS TO THE FAMILY IRIDACEAE
Iris means rainbow, a fitting name for this genus in which we truly find all the colors of the rainbow, as well as combinations thereof. This genus consists of as many as 200 species, which occur exclusively in the Northern Hemisphere. Thousands of cultivars have emerged from these.
The underground parts consist of bulbs or (often thickened) rootstocks, known as rhizomes. The flower of an iris consists of two (main) parts: the upright part is referred to as the standard, or petal, and the downward (hanging) part as the lip or beard.
