Rembrandt Tulpen

Tulpen met een gevlamde of ‘gebroken’ tekening waren de meest gewilde tijdens de hoogtijdagen van de Tulipomania, toen de rood-wit gestreepte ‘Semper Augustus’ 25 zilveren guldens per aas (0,05 gram) kostte, ofwel 2500 gulden per bol van 5 gram. Andere bollen gingen weg voor een prijs gelijk aan die van een statig grachtenpand. Deze ‘Rosen’ (rood of roze gestreept op een witte ondergrond), ‘Violetten’ of ‘Bijbloemen’ (violet of lila op wit) en ‘Bizarden’ (alle voorkomende kleuren op een gele ondergrond) werden veelvuldig afgebeeld in kostbare bloemengidsen en bollencatalogi. Later bleken ze niet erg gezond, maar pas in 1928 werd ontdekt dat een mozaïekvirus de oorzaak van de gevlamde tekening was. Wat wij nu Rembrandt Tulpen noemen zijn echter zorgvuldig op gebroken kleuren geselecteerde, niet-zieke kweekproducten op basis van Darwin Tulpen die in weinig op de vroegere gevlamde tulpen lijken. Tegelijk worden er ook nog enkele van de oorspronkelijke, geïnfecteerde soorten als ‘Columbine’, ‘Mabel’, ‘Silver Standaard’ en ‘Zomerschoon’ gekweekt. Deze worden echter zorgvuldig uit de buurt van andere tulpen gehouden om infectie en daarmee verzwakking te voorkomen.
