Description
Autumn bell flower. ‘Fairy bell flower’ in German. From August, graceful pearl white bell-shaped flowers appear, often in pairs, on a stem that turns red in the fall. This red colour extends to the ovary at the top of the flower. Various wild forms are found in the Southwest of Europe and North Africa, where this species grows easily in sunny locations in well drained soil.
BELONGS TO THE FAMILY OF AMARYLLIDACEAE
Derived from the Greek word leucoeion, which means 'white eyes'. This name was used by Hippocrates. This genus is closely related to Galanthus. The main difference lies in the length of the sepals. In Leucojum, they are of equal length.
