Iris x robusta 'Gerard Darby'

Was created by crossing Iris versicolor with Iris virginica, creating hybrids of which some have been selected as valuable cultivars, with 'Gerard Darby' being one of the best. Both parents are moisture-loving plants with their offspring therefore thriving best in swampy soil. Mature plants grow to about 100 cm high and bloom in July with masses of bright blue flowers that stand out beautifully above the leaves. In the autumn, the leaves retract and when completely dry can be cut off at the bases with a sharp knife.
