BELONGS TO THE FAMILY OF COLCHICACEAE
The Colchicum owes its Dutch name ‘herfsttijloos’ (autumn crocus) to the fact that the flowers usually appear in autumn, followed by the leaves and fruits in spring and early summer. This spring- and autumn-flowering bulbous plant prefers a lightly shaded location, for example as underplanting for deciduous shrubs on somewhat moist but well-drained soil. The name Colchicum is derived from one of its original locations, namely the region of Colchis in Asia Minor, the region where the mythological poisoner Medea lived.
They are also found in Iran, Turkestan, and in large parts of Europe. It has been known for centuries that the autumn crocus contains, among other things, the alkaloid colchicine, which is used in medical science. Colchicum (and especially the larger sizes) is suitable for indoor flowering.
What was previously offered under Bulbocodium and Merendera can now be found under Colchicum.
