Allium senescens 'Meise'

The European and Asian A. senescens comprise many species and subspecies, not all of which have been identified. P. de Jong discovered this profusely flowering selection around 1980 at a nursery in the National Botanic Garden of Belgium in Meise. It is notable for its light grey foliage and early flowering. As with A. nutans, the sturdy stems initially bear a 5 cm long, drooping umbel. During flowering, however, it stands upright and the plant displays its lilac-purple flowers.
