Description

Intro: 1753. Also known as wild garlic. This rampant allium occurs on large parts of the Northern Hemisphere. In the Netherlands it grows wild in some places, but it is a protected species (‘Stinzen plant’). The oval leaves are reminiscent of those of the Lily-of-the-valley. The flower stalk is triangular. The hemispherical umbel is composed of white star-shaped flowers. The leaves are edible and have a cholesterol-lowering effect, they can be used to prepare a delicious soup. The underground parts are also edible. The plant emits a pungent onion smell.
