Crocus orphei
Description
Greek botanists Theophanis Karamplianis and Theophanis Constantinidis first described the Orpheus crocus in 2010. Its range is limited, the crocus is found only on Mount Falakro in north-eastern Greece in the region of eastern Macedonia, often together with C. alexandri. Violet, soft violet with brown-violet stripes clearly visible on the outside.
BELONGS TO THE FAMILY OF IRIDACEAE
One of the best-known bulbous plants is undoubtedly the crocus. As early as 1548, a publication entitled The Names of Herbes by William Turner described a list of crocuses for the garden. The monograph The World Of Crocus by Janis Ruksans provides us with good insight into this genus. Crocus comprises a very large number of species and the hundreds of cultivars derived from them. The selection, in which we have followed the nomenclature from the new monograph as closely as possible, consists of a fairly broad spectrum including very rare species and cultivars that were sometimes not previously available in the Netherlands. Virtually all crocuses are suitable for naturalization.
