Camassia leichtlinii 'Aurora'
Description
As a member of the nomenclature committee of the K.A.V.B., you have the privilege of visiting the test garden on a regular basis. The test garden has a collection of Camassia planted up and for several years I have been following this striking appearance among its peers. Firm, full spikes with mauve-coloured, large star-shaped flowers that show a clearly visible blue central vein on the back of the flower. Gorgeous, a real addition to the range of Camassia.
BELONGS TO THE HYACINTHACEAE FAMILY
Camassia is one of the special bulbous plants that comes into its own perfectly in a border, but is also recommended for under shrubs. The origin of most camassias lies in North America, where the bulbs served as food for Native Americans until this century, from which the name Camassia (derived from Quamash or Camass) was derived. In addition to nutrient-rich sandy soil, Camassia also thrives on heavier clay soil, as long as the soil does not remain too wet in winter.
