Widow Iris. Intro: 1597. Origin: Southern Europe, North Africa, Israel and Turkey. The long and square leaves appear very early. The fragrant flowers are quite special: the ascending portion of the flower (the standard) is yellowish green while the drooping part (lip) is very dark purple with a cream stripe. Naturalises well on a warm spot in well-drained, sandy soil.
